NATO to Strengthen Baltic Presence Following Finnish-led Cable Sabotage Investigation
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte announced that the alliance will increase its military presence in the Baltic Sea following recent damage to undersea cables between Estonia and Finland on X on December 27.
The statement came after Rutte’s conversation with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, during which they discussed the ongoing investigation led by Finland into the suspected sabotage of the underwater cables.
“I expressed my full solidarity and support,” Rutte stated. “NATO will strengthen its military presence in the Baltic Sea.”
Earlier, the Finnish Coast Guard intercepted and boarded the Russian vessel ‘Orel S’ within Finnish waters following suspicions of its involvement in an attack on the Estlink 2 undersea power cable. The ship’s captain is the primary suspect in the incident.
