Russia’s missile attack on Kyiv early Friday morning caused damage to several diplomatic missions, including the embassies of Portugal, Argentina, Albania, Palestine, North Macedonia, and Montenegro, reported a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Heorhii Tykhyi on December 20.
The Portuguese Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian chargé d’affaires in Lisbon to lodge an official protest, Portuguese media RTP reported.
Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel condemned the attack, stating, “This is highly condemnable. Any attack by the Russian Federation on Ukraine and the city of Kyiv deserves our condemnation. But it is absolutely unacceptable that there could be attacks that impact or target diplomatic facilities.”
The Portuguese Embassy sustained minor damage, including shattered windows and warped doors. No injuries were reported. Other embassies located in the same building, representing Argentina, Albania, and Montenegro, also suffered damage.
The FM also hinted at potential further actions, noting that it is the “position of the Portuguese Republic towards the Russian Federation, other steps will be taken at another level, a little later.”
Earlier today, Russian forces launched a coordinated missile attack on Kyiv, with an Air Force stating that Russia launched 5 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles targeting the capital of Ukraine. The missiles were launched from the Russian Voronezh and Bryansk regions.
