Recent statements from the Russian telegram channels have acknowledged accusations of deploying chemical weapons against Ukrainian forces. Previously, Russian authorities dismissed these allegations as “unfounded.” However, a video shared on the one of Russian neo nazi unit’s channel featured a message stating: “We are targeting Ukrainian strongholds with VOG grenades and chloropicrin.”

Chloropicrin, a toxic chemical, was first used in World War I and is prohibited under the Geneva Conventions. Exposure to this substance can lead to various symptoms, including:

  • Temporary blindness or eye pain

  • Severe coughing and chemical burns to the respiratory tract

  • Skin irritation or chemical burns

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Effects on the central nervous system, potentially causing seizures at high doses.

This incident aligns with ongoing reports of Russian forces utilizing chemical munitions. According to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, there were 447 documented instances of chemical weapon use by Russian troops in August alone, with a total of 4,035 occurrences since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

The types of chemical agents employed include K-51 and RG-VO, which are classified as riot control agents and are prohibited in warfare. The General Staff emphasized that these actions constitute a blatant violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, which prohibits the development, production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons.

International condemnation has followed these actions. The United Kingdom recently imposed sanctions on the Russian military for its use of chemical weapons in Ukraine, specifically targeting the Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Defense troops and their commander, Igor Kirillov. British officials underscored their commitment to holding those responsible for these violations accountable.

In addition, reports indicate that Russian forces have escalated their use of ammunition filled with hazardous chemicals. This has raised concerns among Ukrainian medical authorities, who have reported that over 1,385 military personnel sought medical assistance for symptoms associated with chemical exposure.
