European countries pledged over €21 billion ($24 billion) in military aid to Ukraine during a meeting of Western backers in Brussels on Friday, underscoring continued efforts to help the country counter Russia’s ongoing invasion.

British Defence Secretary John Healey who chaired the meeting, called the new funding a “record boost” for Ukraine’s military, while also confirming that support would be surged to the frontline according to AP News on April 11.

The Ramstein format meeting, held in Brussels, brought together defense ministers and senior officials from around 50 countries, including NATO members and global partners, to coordinate and strengthen military support for Ukraine amid Russia’s invasion.

While Healey did not provide a breakdown of the funds, concerns remain about whether countries will deliver on their promises, as Ukraine has previously expressed dissatisfaction with unmet commitments or repeated offers of outdated assistance.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte confirmed that Ukraine’s supporters have already provided about $21 billion in military aid this year, while European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that more than $26 billion has been pledged overall.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, who attended the NATO meeting virtually, emphasized the need to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses as a key issue moving forward.

He praised the meeting as “productive, effective, and efficient,” noting that it resulted in one of the largest assistance packages Ukraine has received. Umerov expressed gratitude to the nations contributing to the effort.

The United Kingdom, in partnership with Norway, announced a joint initiative to allocate over $580 million for providing hundreds of thousands of military drones, radar systems, and anti-tank mines, as well as contracts for the repair and maintenance of Ukrainian armored vehicles.

As the war against Ukraine continues, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed his call for more advanced defense systems, particularly after a devastating missile strike in his hometown that killed 20 people, including nine children, just a week earlier.
