Representatives of the security services from seven European countries have warned about the threat of Russian sabotage at Norway's energy facilities. Norway is currently the largest supplier of natural gas in Europe.

Reuters reported this based on statements made by officials.

At the closed meeting organized by the Norwegian intelligence service PST, representatives from Norway, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, and Iceland discussed the risks of espionage and sabotage from Russia.

“We see a development in a situation that affects not only Germany or our Norwegian colleagues but all of us. This is a threat from certain countries, such as Russia, involving not only espionage operations but also the risk of sabotage in various sectors,” said Sinan Selen, Vice President of the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

Beate Gangås, head of Norwegian counterintelligence, emphasized that Russia poses a significant threat to Norway's energy sector. “When we are talking about sabotage today, we are talking about Russia,,” she stated.

Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Norway—a NATO member with a shared border with Russia in the Arctic—has become Europe’s largest supplier of natural gas, delivered through an extensive network of underwater pipelines.

On August 26, Norway warned that Russian intelligence might be recruiting Norwegian criminals to carry out acts of sabotage for its interests.
