A seven-year-old girl killed in a Russian missile strike on a residential building in Ternopil has been identified as Amelia, a Polish citizen, Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on November 21.

Her mother, Oksana, was also killed in the attack.

Polish MFA spokesperson Maciej Wawrzyniak said the ministry was deeply shaken by the deaths.

“Together with Amelia, her mother also became a victim of this cruelty,” he stated, adding that the Polish side “remains in constant contact with the authorities of the Ternopil region.”

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also responded to the tragedy, underscoring the profound human cost of Russia’s war.

“Amelia was seven years old. Seven. A Polish child. She died in Ternopil during a brutal missile attack by Russia,” Tusk said. “She will never fulfill any of her dreams. This cruel war must end, and Russia cannot win it. Because this is also a war for the future of our children.”

Earlier, Ternopil Secondary School No. 27 confirmed that the girl was their 2nd-grade student, Amelia Grześko. According to school staff, Amelia and her mother Oksana “burned alive, embracing each other” when flames engulfed their apartment after the strike.

In the early hours of November 19, Russia launched a massive overnight aerial assault across several Ukrainian cities, targeting western regions with a combination of suicide drones and cruise missiles. At least 25 people were killed and 122 injured, including children.
