Russia’s air force faces ongoing challenges, delivering 24 new combat aircraft in 2024 while losing at least 23. According to Defence24, this year’s deliveries reflect stagnation or a decline in production capacity, highlighting growing strain on Russia’s ability to maintain its air power.

The latest batches of Su-34 frontline bombers and Su-57 fighters have been delivered to the Russian Aerospace Forces, according to the manufacturer. These are likely the final combat aircraft deliveries for the year.

Deliveries included:

  • 10 Su-34M frontline bombers

  • 6 Su-35S fighters

  • 6 Su-57 fifth-generation fighters

  • 2 Su-30 multirole aircraft

These figures are lower than in previous years, with 27 aircraft delivered in 2022 and 24 in 2023. Notably, recent deliveries appear to have consisted of only a single Su-34 bomber and one Su-57 fighter, suggesting potential production or supply chain constraints.

At the same time, at least 23 combat aircraft were destroyed, with additional planes damaged. Losses include:

  • 9 Su-34 bombers destroyed, 10 damaged

  • 2 Su-35S fighters destroyed

  • 2 Tu-22M3 strategic bombers destroyed, 1 damaged

  • 3 Su-27 fighters destroyed, 1 damaged

  • 2 MiG-31 interceptors destroyed

  • 1 Su-57 fifth-generation fighter damaged

In addition, non-combat losses included two early warning A-50 aircraft, a Yak-130 trainer, and an S-70 “Okhotnik” unmanned combat drone.

According to Defence24, a portion of Russia's losses is attributed to accidents, including equipment wear and friendly fire.

The reported losses are likely a minimum estimate, as the impact of recent attacks on Russian airfields remains unclear.

Previously, it was reported that recent satellite imagery has revealed Russia is constructing fortified shelters and other protective structures for aircraft at the Belbek airbase near Sevastopol in occupied Crimea.

In 2025, Russia is expected to reach record levels of military spending, reflecting its continued focus on its military actions in Ukraine.
