US Senator Richard Blumenthal has urged Congress to accelerate the voting process for a new sanctions bill against Russia, emphasizing that Russian leader Vladimir Putin “does not deserve any more time,” he claimed on July 30.

In an exclusive interview with Ukrainian news outlet Suspilne, Blumenthal, a co-sponsor of the bill, said, “I agree that Putin does not deserve additional time and we need to speed up the vote on the sanctions bill. Everything the President is doing is on the right track, but I strongly advocate for sanctions of 500%, not 100%.”

Blumenthal proposed that Congress seize the moment and pass the bill swiftly, citing strong support in the Senate. “There are 85 supporters in the Senate, and if needed, we could reach 90 votes,” he added.

“I believe that voting now is a reachable and necessary goal. Now is the time to act, not only through the President’s executive orders but also through legislative action to show unity between the President and Congress. We need to pass this bill to show that we are fulfilling our commitments to Ukraine,” Senator continued.

He emphasized that the proposed sanctions would help “end the war” and that “Putin must understand this.”

On July 28, US President Donald Trump stated that Russia had “10 or 12 days” to end its war against Ukraine, or else he would impose tariffs and other measures to pressure Russia.

Meanwhile, Republican Senator Roger Marshall also weighed in, calling for “maximum flexibility” in Trump’s actions.

“We see that Putin is not responding to anything, so we need to step up our sanctions. I think we can impose sanctions on the banking sector, and we also need to consider secondary sanctions,” Marshall said.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham also commented, stating that if “Putin does not come to the negotiating table,” Trump would impose tariffs on China and India, which “buy Russian oil and don’t help Ukraine.”

“He can do this either through an executive order or legislative action in Congress,” Graham added. “Good news for Ukraine: the President will increase pressure on Russia’s clients to force Putin to the negotiating table.”

Previously, the US House of Representatives had approved legislation to continue military assistance to Ukraine, reinforcing bipartisan support for Kyiv’s defense effort against Russia’s ongoing full-scale war.
