Senior Russian Intelligence General Shot in Moscow Apartment Building

An unidentified attacker in Moscow has attempted to assassinate Russian Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, the first deputy head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Russian General Staff (GRU). The senior officer was hospitalized following the shooting, according to Russian state media on February 6.
Reports from Russian outlets say the attack occurred inside a residential building on Volokolamsk Highway in the northwestern part of the capital. The assailant allegedly fired several shots into Alekseyev’s back before fleeing the scene.

Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed that a criminal case has been opened over the attempted killing and said a search for the suspect is underway. Officials have not disclosed the general’s current medical condition.
Alekseyev, who was born in Ukraine’s Vinnytsia region, graduated from the Ryazan Airborne Command School and has served as first deputy chief of the GRU since 2011.

Among other responsibilities, he is believed to oversee intelligence used to select targets for Russian airstrikes against Ukraine.
His superior, GRU chief Igor Kostyukov, leads the Russian delegation in negotiations involving Ukraine and the United States. Alekseyev has also been widely described as one of the key architects and supervisors of the Wagner private military company.

Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage and searching for witnesses as the probe continues.
Earlier, a car bomb detonated in southern Moscow, killing a senior Russian military official.
Initial reports said the officer suffered multiple shrapnel wounds and fractures and was in critical condition. Later, Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed that the target of the attack—Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov—died from his injuries.
