According to Defense Express on March 10, the photographs show the missile mounted on a Serbian MiG-29. The outlet reported that this suggests Belgrade has introduced a new strike capability able to engage both land and maritime targets.

The outlet reported that the missile’s high speed could make it particularly suitable for striking high-value ground targets such as air defense systems, radar stations, and airfields.

The CM-400AKG missile has been in service with Pakistan’s Air Force since 2013. Pakistani officials stated in 2025 that the missile had been used in combat against an Indian S-400 air defense system. However, the outlet noted that no independent confirmation of the strike’s success has been publicly presented.

According to Defense Express, the CM-400AKG is an export version of China’s YJ-12 supersonic anti-ship missile. Open-source estimates cited by the outlet suggest the missile has a range of up to 250 kilometers—roughly half the range attributed to the YJ-12—while carrying a warhead weighing approximately 150–200 kilograms.

The missile is believed to reach speeds of Mach 3.5 to Mach 4, although it is sometimes marketed as a hypersonic system exceeding Mach 5.

The missile likely uses a combination of inertial navigation and satellite guidance during flight. It may also employ an infrared seeker during the terminal phase to lock onto the target.

The integration of CM-400AKG missiles could significantly expand the strike capabilities of Serbia’s MiG-29 fleet. Serbia currently operates around 14 MiG-29 aircraft.

Belgrade has also ordered 12 French Rafale fighter jets as part of a broader modernization of its air force.

According to Defense Express, the appearance of the missiles on Serbian aircraft also indirectly contradicts earlier Russian claims from 2024 suggesting that Serbia might transfer MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine. The outlet noted that those reports claimed Serbia could supply up to 36 aircraft—despite the country operating far fewer jets.

Serbia has previously displayed advanced foreign military systems. During a military parade in Belgrade in September 2025, the country showcased Russian Krasukha-2 and Krasukha-4 electronic warfare systems.
