Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić to arrive in Ukraine for a one-day visit—his first to the country since taking office, Ukrainian media European Pravda reported on June 11.

Vučić is attending the Ukraine–Southeast Europe Summit, which Serbian media report is being held in Odesa, a strategic port city on the Black Sea.

The visit was not announced in advance. According to the Serbian president’s press service, the public learned of the trip only after Vučić had already departed for Ukraine, an unusual move for a sitting head of state.

Vučić’s attendance comes just a month after he and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico were the only European leaders to join Russian leader Vladimir Putin at Moscow’s Victory Day celebrations on May 9—a display of solidarity that drew widespread scrutiny from Western officials.

The Serbian leader’s visit to Ukraine, particularly in the context of an international summit, could signal a nuanced recalibration of Belgrade’s diplomatic positioning amid ongoing tensions between Russia and the West over the war in Ukraine.

Further details about Vučić’s agenda in Ukraine or any bilateral meetings have not yet been disclosed.

Earlier, Serbia extended its contract with Russia for natural gas supplies until September 30.
