Six individuals have been detained in Serbia on suspicion of plotting actions against the constitutional order and national security, the country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs announced on June 26.

According to investigators, the suspects met on June 21 at a hotel in the city of Kraljevo to plan the violent overthrow of the Serbian government. Discussions reportedly included attacks on police and state officials, as well as plans to seize government buildings and media offices by force.

During the arrests, police recovered a pistol with its serial number removed from one suspect — who did not have a firearms license. Another suspect was found in possession of a crossbow.

All six individuals have been detained for 48 hours. According to Radio Svoboda, one of the detainees is Novica Antić, former president of the Serbian Military Trade Union, who is believed by Western intelligence agencies to be a Russian agent.

Antić has been under scrutiny since a Politico report in March 2024 revealed, citing Western intelligence, that he acted as a Russian “agent of influence” with close ties to Russia’s Federal Security Service. His involvement in a failed Kremlin-linked disinformation campaign targeting the European Parliament was also detailed earlier this year.

Earlier, French authorities had arrested three Serbian nationals suspected of orchestrating coordinated acts of vandalism targeting Jewish landmarks in Paris — allegedly on behalf of a foreign state, possibly Russia.
