Slovenia joined NATO’s PURL initiative and allocated funds to purchase US weapons for Ukraine, Prime Minister Robert Golob announced during a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Dnevnik reported on October 13.

“Protecting Ukrainians is our duty,” Golob said, explaining that Ljubljana’s decision to join the program reflects its commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense.

Golob added, “That’s why Slovenia decided to join the PURL initiative—to help protect civilians and infrastructure, which is now even more important ahead of winter. I don’t have the authority to disclose the amount allocated for the purchase of weapons for Ukraine, but it is included in the Ministry of Defense’s 2025 budget. So these are not additional expenses.”

The PURL initiative enables NATO member states to jointly fund and procure military equipment for Ukraine through coordinated mechanisms managed by the Alliance.

Previously, it was reported that European nations—including some of Ukraine’s strongest allies—continue to import billions of euros’ worth of Russian energy, even as they supply Kyiv with military and humanitarian aid.
