On February 8, disruptions in Starlink access significantly weakened Russian command-and-control capabilities on several parts of the front, forcing a shift in tactical behavior and reducing the effectiveness of small assault groups supported by drones, according to a recent report.

The report cites Ukraine’s Joint Forces Group, which stated that Russia’s reliance on satellite connectivity for real-time coordination has been undermined by the disabling of Starlink terminals used by Russian units.

According to the Ukrainian military, the communication blackout has affected the Russian military’s ability to operate drones in support of mobile infantry teams. These teams had previously relied on real-time video and remote control for precision and coordination during frontline assaults.

The breakdown in satellite communications, combined with adverse weather conditions, has made it increasingly difficult for Russian forces to maintain situational awareness. Without uninterrupted drone feeds, small units are often left operating without coordination or timely correction.

Ukrainian forces report that in the Kupiansk sector, Russian elements now appear to be fragmented and focused primarily on survival rather than offensive maneuvers.

In areas near Vovchansk and other border sectors, Russian units are attempting attacks without effective centralized command, leading to disjointed and unsustained operations.

The statement from the Ukrainian Joint Forces Group reads: “In the Kupiansk direction, isolated groups are fighting not for advancement, but for survival. In Vovchansk and the border area—attempts to push forward without systemic control.”

Earlier, on February 2, Russian state TV host Vladimir Solovyov publicly called for a nuclear detonation in space to eliminate Starlink satellites, accusing the system of enabling Western military operations against Russia.

The remarks followed confirmation from Elon Musk that SpaceX had begun restricting Starlink access for Russian forces after reports it was used to guide drones in Ukraine.
