Suspicious Drone Sightings in Northern Germany Prompt Espionage Investigations

Several drones were spotted overnight in Schleswig-Holstein, marking another incident following similar sightings in Denmark. The Federal Ministry of the Interior of Germany has stated it is investigating the situation, suspecting possible espionage activities, according to a NDR reported on September 26.

State police in Schleswig-Holstein have stepped up drone defense in coordination with neighboring northern German regions.

Details about the number and locations of the drones have not been disclosed by Interior Minister Sabine Sütterlin-Waack. Authorities are collaborating closely with federal agencies and the German military, NDR writes.

Meanwhile, Denmark has also reported multiple recent drone sightings, prompting the Danish government to label the incidents as a “hybrid attack.” Authorities in Copenhagen believe a professional actor is behind these incursions and have heightened border controls due to concerns over potential drone transport.

Although the origin and purpose of the drones remain unclear, officials in Schleswig-Holstein remain vigilant, with Sütterlin-Waack emphasizing the continued investigation into espionage and sabotage risks, according to NDR.

Concerns over these ongoing incidents have been raised by Niclas Dürbrook, SPD’s  spokesperson for internal security. He stressed the need for rapid, coordinated responses between northern German states and Denmark, should the espionage suspicion prove true.

This is not the first drone-related incident in Schleswig-Holstein. Earlier in September, police forces intercepted a ship on the North Sea Canal, believed to have been used as a drone launch site. Further investigations are underway, NDR reports.

Earlier, during a UN Security Council meeting, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen warned that Russia’s violations of NATO airspace are an attempt to undermine Europe’s security architecture.
