Sweden unveiled a record-breaking military aid package for Ukraine, pledging 16 billion Swedish kronor (about $1.6 billion)—its largest defense contribution to Kyiv to date, Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson announced, according to Reuters on March 31.
The largest share of the package—9.2 billion kronor ($920 million)—will be allocated to military equipment procurement under the supervision of Sweden’s Defense Materiel Administration.
Jonson later specified that the aid includes air defense support, artillery, satellite communications, and naval capabilities to bolster Ukraine’s defenses.
Sweden had previously announced plans to significantly increase its aid to Ukraine, committing 40 billion kronor (nearly $4 billion) in 2025, up from the previously planned 25 billion ($2.5 billion).
These funds will support Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s war of aggression.
Earlier, Sweden unveiled its largest rearmament plan since the Cold War, aiming to increase defense spending to 3.5% of GDP by 2030, and pledged to almost double the support for Ukraine.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson noted that Sweden’s defense budget already exceeds NATO’s 2% benchmark but emphasized that more investment is necessary.
“Our goal is to push for an increase in this benchmark at the NATO summit in The Hague, and we are doing our part,” he stated.
Under the new plan, Sweden will invest nearly 300 billion Swedish kronor ($30 billion) in military upgrades, funded through loans.
