Drones struck the Kostroma State District Power Plant (GRES) early on November 6, causing explosions and a fire at one of Russia’s largest energy facilities, according to Russian media Astra.

The plant, located in the city of Volgorechensk in the Kostroma region, is the third most powerful thermal power station in Russia, supplying electricity to much of the central part of the country, including industrial and defense facilities.

Regional governor Sergey Sitnikov confirmed “explosions at energy infrastructure sites,” though he claimed that Russian air defenses “repelled the drone attack.” In a statement cited by Astra, Sitnikov said there were no casualties and that “power supply has not been disrupted.”

Residents of Volgorechensk reported several loud explosions and bright flashes in the area of the plant. Photos and videos shared on social media and verified by Astra show flames and smoke rising above the facility.

Kostroma GRES has an installed capacity of around 3,600 megawatts. Its 320-meter smokestack is among the tallest in Europe.

Earlier on November 6, Ukrainian forces carried out a precision strike on a Shahed drone storage and launch complex at the occupied Donetsk airport. According to Commander Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, the operation followed months of intelligence gathering and involved Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces, Rocket Forces, and the 414th Brigade.

Video footage shows multiple explosions and secondary blasts, indicating the destruction of fuel and munitions used for assembling Iranian-made drones.
