Trump Administration Delists Russian Banks and Business Figures From Syria Sanctions

US President Donald Trump has lifted sanctions against Syria, a move that also removed several Russian banks, companies, and individuals from US sanctions lists.
According to The Moscow Times, citing a statement from the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, among those delisted is Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, former head of Kalmykia and ex-president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). Ilyumzhinov was sanctioned in 2015 over ties to the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. At the time, his assets in the US were frozen.
“I believe this is due to my active international work. I’ve traveled to North Korea and Syria and met with Bashar al-Assad,” he commented.

Several Russian entities previously targeted under Syria-related sanctions were also removed from the blacklist. These include Russian Financial Alliance Bank, the now-defunct Tempbank, Mir Business Bank (a Russian subsidiary of Iran’s Bank Melli), state-owned RFK Bank, Promsyrieimport, the state arms exporter Rosoboronexport, as well as companies like Global Concept Groups, Global Vision Group, STG Logistic, and Maritime Assistance.
Earlier, Spain significantly ramped up diesel imports from Morocco, raising concerns that fuel of Russian origin may be slipping into the country in violation of EU sanctions.
