U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the issue of sanctions against Russia during a press conference at the White House on Tuesday, 25 February, stating that there are currently no discussions regarding their removal. However, he acknowledged that it may be a possibility in the future.

When asked whether sanctions on Russia were being considered as part of negotiations to resolve the war against Ukraine, Trump responded, “No, we haven’t lifted any sanctions on anybody […] I guess it will be at some point, but right now we [haven't agreed to lift sanctions on anybody].”

Trump’s comments come amid recent statements by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who suggested that easing sanctions could become part of the negotiation process. Bessent had indicated that the United States was prepared to adjust sanctions, either tightening or loosening them, depending on Russia's willingness to engage in talks.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had assured European allies that sanctions on Russia would remain in place until a resolution is reached to end the Russo-Ukrainian war, as reported by Bloomberg.

Earlier, Sergey Lavrov, Russia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that hostilities along the contact line in Ukraine will continue.
