Trump Administration Warns China Against Supporting Russia’s War Efforts in Ukraine

The United States has issued a strong warning to China over its ongoing support for Russia’s military and economic activities amid the war in Ukraine.
According to US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker, any continued assistance to Moscow could trigger secondary tariffs under President Donald Trump’s administration.
In comments reported by Bloomberg, Whitaker said that China must end what he described as indirect financing of Russia’s war through trade and strategic cooperation.
He noted that the White House is prepared to impose tariffs on any country that continues purchasing Russian energy resources, should Russia fail to agree to a peace deal in the coming weeks.
The ambassador also stated that Beijing is effectively waging a proxy war against the West by backing Moscow. Some official remarks from the Chinese government, he added, suggest an intention to draw the United States and its allies deeper into the war in Ukraine.

“We see in certain statements from the Chinese government that they are attempting to keep the United States and our allies occupied with this war, preventing us from addressing other strategic challenges,” Whitaker said.
“I believe China has miscalculated. They should be held accountable for subsidizing the violence occurring on the battlefields of Ukraine.”
Earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas that Beijing “cannot accept” a Russian defeat in Ukraine, warning it would shift the full weight of US strategic pressure onto China. The remarks were made during a tense four-hour meeting in Brussels, where Wang denied any military or financial support for Moscow but emphasized China’s geopolitical stake in the outcome of the war.
