Trump and Zelenskyy Speak After Putin Meeting in Alaska, With Zelenskyy’s US Visit in the Works

US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a prolonged conversation in the early hours of August 16, shortly after Trump’s return from his summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
The call began one-on-one between the two leaders and later expanded to include several European heads of government. According to Zelenskyy, the discussion lasted more than an hour and a half, with roughly an hour spent speaking directly with Trump.
“Ukraine once again confirms that it is ready to work as productively as possible for the sake of peace. President Trump informed me about his meeting with the Russian leader, about the main points of the conversation. It is important that America’s strength influences the development of the situation,” Zelenskyy said in an official statement.
The Ukrainian president also voiced support for Trump’s proposal to organize a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the US, and Russia. “Key issues can be discussed at the level of leaders, and the trilateral format is suitable for this,” Zelenskyy emphasized.

Zelenskyy further noted that all details related to ending hostilities and achieving peace would be discussed with Trump during his upcoming visit to Washington on Monday. He expressed gratitude for the invitation and underscored the need for Europe’s involvement at every stage to ensure reliable security guarantees alongside the US.
“We discussed positive signals from the American side regarding participation in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security. We continue to coordinate our positions with all partners,” Zelenskyy said, thanking those who support Ukraine.
The call followed Trump’s face-to-face meeting with Putin in Alaska, which is widely regarded as a critical juncture for Ukraine’s future and for broader European security. Observers noted that Trump’s direct engagement with European partners immediately after the summit was intended to highlight coordination and solidarity with Kyiv.
