Trump representatives have given Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy just days to respond to a proposed peace agreement that would require Ukraine to accept territorial losses in exchange for vague US security guarantees, the Financial Times reported on December 9.

The proposal, delivered during a two-hour call by Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, reportedly aims for a deal to be finalized “by Christmas,” according to officials briefed on the discussions.

Zelenskyy told European leaders he was being pressed for a swift decision but insisted on time to consult with allies in France, Germany, and the UK. Ukrainian officials worry the US approach could fracture Western unity if America proceeds without European support.

The negotiations follow recent talks in Miami between Trump’s envoys and Kyiv’s representatives. An initial 28-point peace plan, originally shaped with input from Moscow and described as “anti-Ukrainian,” has been revised down to 20 points and is said to better reflect Ukraine’s interests.

FT highlights that Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is actively working on the European components of a potential peace framework and preparing to present them to American partners. Still, he emphasized that any meaningful peace depends on whether Russia is ready to halt its aggression.

Earlier, it was reported that the European Commission emphasized that any elections in Ukraine can only take place when conditions are suitable for their conduct, responding to US President Donald Trump’s call for presidential elections in Ukraine.
