Trump Has Not Signed Off on 45-Day Iran Ceasefire Ahead of White House Address

Regional mediators have drafted a last-ditch 45-day ceasefire proposal to end the war in Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Though US President Donald Trump has yet to sign off on the plan, CNN reported on April 6.
The proposal, delivered to both Washington and Tehran late April 5, is viewed as a final attempt to stave off the massive strikes on Iranian power plants and infrastructure that Trump has threatened if the critical waterway remains blocked. However, the White House has publicly cooled expectations regarding an immediate breakthrough.

An administration official downplayed the draft as just “one of many ideas” and confirmed that US military operations against Iran are currently continuing apace. President Trump is expected to address the war directly during a 1 p.m. ET news conference at the White House today, according to CNN.
The diplomatic maneuvering is being spearheaded by Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey after indirect talks stalled last week and hopes for an in-person meeting dissolved. The latest draft was sent directly to US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, with the goal of using the 45-day window to negotiate a permanent end to the conflict before Trump’s strict 8 p.m. ET deadline on April 7.

Despite the urgency from regional mediators, securing a mutual agreement remains highly challenging. Iranian officials have already signaled strong resistance to a temporary ceasefire, arguing that a brief pause would merely give their adversaries time to regroup and prepare for the continuation of the war. If the plan fails to gain traction before April 7 evening, the region faces an unprecedented escalation of the US military campaign.
The diplomatic scramble to secure a ceasefire follows weeks of severe volatility and fluctuating global energy markets caused by the ongoing war in Iran. In late March, President Trump ordered a temporary pause on strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure following what he described as productive talks, which triggered an immediate drop in global oil prices.
However, relations with allies have frayed under the pressure of the conflict, with the US president recently threatening to withdraw from NATO due to a perceived lack of European support for his military objectives in the Middle East. As mediators race against the April 7 deadline, the outcome will likely determine whether the region spirals into a broader war affecting global maritime trade.
