On August 1, US President Donald Trump said he has ordered two nuclear submarines to be deployed near Russia in response to recent remarks by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, calling the statements “foolish and inflammatory.”

Posting on Truth Social, Trump said the move was a precaution aimed at countering what he described as provocative rhetoric from Medvedev, who now serves as Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council.

“Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, who is now the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump wrote.

“Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The clash began after Medvedev criticized Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on Russia and its oil buyers if Moscow does not agree to a Ukraine ceasefire by August 8.

Trump fired back:
“Tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he’s still President, to watch his words. He’s entering very dangerous territory!”

Medvedev responded on Telegram that Trump’s reaction proved Russia was on the right path, warning him not to forget “how dangerous the fabled ‘Dead Hand’ can be,” referring to Russia’s Cold War–era nuclear retaliation system.

Trump has repeatedly accused Medvedev of nuclear saber-rattling. In June, he wrote:

“Did I hear Former President Medvedev… casually throwing around the ‘N word’ (Nuclear!)…?”
“I guess that’s why Putin’s ‘THE BOSS’,” he added.

Previously, Donald Trump condemned Russia’s latest deadly missile strike on Kyiv, calling the attack “disgusting” and promising new sanctions against Moscow, speaking at a White House press conference.
