Trump Slaps India With 25% Tariff for Backing Russia Amid “Killing in Ukraine”

US President Donald Trump announced that the United States will impose a 25% tariff on Indian imports starting August 1, citing India’s continued military and energy ties with Russia as well as its restrictive trade practices.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said that although “India is our friend,” the country has historically maintained “far too high” tariffs and “the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers of any country.”
He added that the has conducted “relatively little business” with India due to these practices.

Trump emphasized that India “has always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia,” and described the country as “Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China.”
He criticized this relationship in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine, stating that such actions are “ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!”
As a result, Trump declared: “INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST.”
Earlier, on July 29, Trump gave Russia a 10-day deadline to begin peace talks with Ukraine or face new US sanctions, including tariffs and economic penalties. Speaking aboard Air Force One, he said, “Ten days from today… Then we’ll put on tariffs and other things.”
The ultimatum shortened a previous 50-day window and came amid Trump’s public frustration with Putin, whom he called “very disappointing.”
