President Donald Trump’s main priority in Russia’s war against Ukraine remains a diplomatic resolution, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on July 15.

Rubio made the remark during a call with the foreign ministers of the United Kingdom, Germany, and France.

According to the US Department of State, Rubio emphasized that Trump’s focus continues to be bringing an end to the war through negotiations.

“Speaking about the Russo-Ukrainian war, Secretary Rubio highlighted that President Trump’s priority remains its conclusion and resolution through diplomatic negotiations,” the State Department reported.

Earlier this year, Trump asserted that Russia holds “trump cards” in any peace talks because of the significant land it has seized during the war. At the same time, he has suggested that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy lacks comparable leverage, hindering a resolution.

Trump’s stance on diplomacy was reinforced when he discussed the matter publicly in June, recognizing that Russian leader Vladimir Putin is seemingly indifferent to the massive losses Russia has suffered during the war.

“I’m disappointed in him [Putin], but I’m not finished with him. But I’m disappointed in him,” Trump told reporters when asked about his trust in the Russian leader.

When asked how he would pressure Putin to stop the bloodshed, Trump responded: “We are working on it.” This shows the President’s ongoing commitment to engaging in diplomatic efforts, although he has expressed frustration with the slow pace of progress.

In addition to his discussions about the war in Ukraine, Rubio also met with the foreign ministers of the three European countries to discuss other pressing international issues, including stability in the Middle East and preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Earlier, it was reported that President Donald Trump announced a significant shift in US policy regarding Ukraine, pledging to send Patriot missile systems and other advanced weapons to Kyiv.
