Eugene Vindman, a Ukraine-born retired US Army officer known for his role as a whistleblower alongside his twin brother Alexander against then-President Donald Trump, has won a seat in the House of Representatives in Virginia, the Associated Press reported on November 6.

The politician’s election came on the same day Donald Trump won the presidential race, securing his return to the White House in January 2025.

Vindman, born in Kyiv in 1975 as Yevhen Vindman, moved to the US as a child and goes by Eugene.

The Vindman brothers played a crucial role in revealing a 2019 phone call between Trump and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in which Trump attempted to pressure Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden's family.

At the time, Biden was seen as Trump’s likely Democratic opponent. During the call, Trump referenced US military aid to Ukraine, which had been temporarily withheld, leading critics to suggest a possible quid pro quo, suggesting that US aid to Ukraine could depend on Zelenskyy's cooperation with the requested investigation. This raised allegations that Trump was seeking foreign interference in the 2020 election.

The call was a key part of Trump’s first impeachment.

"With the support of our grassroots army, we accomplished something together that many didn't think was possible," Vindman said. "It's a testament to the power of the American experience that an immigrant who escaped a Soviet Regime and came to this great nation with less than $800 in our pockets would now stand here as a congressman-elect of the United States House of Representatives."

While it’s uncertain if the Democratic Party will gain control of the House from Republicans, the Republican Party has already regained the Senate.

Previously on November 6, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke with President-elect Trump, offering his congratulations on what he called a “historic and decisive victory.”
