Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal expressed optimism about continued US support for Ukraine following Donald Trump’s election. Speaking at the Kyiv International Economic Forum on November 7, Shmyhal said he expects “clear and quick actions” from the incoming American administration on issues critical to Ukraine’s security and stability.

“Donald Trump is a strong leader, there is no doubt about that,” Shmyhal added, addressing expectations for US-Ukraine relations under the incoming administration.

Trump, who defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 US presidential election, will be inaugurated on January 20, 2025.

“Both the Republican and Democratic parties support Ukraine. Also, the main thing is that the society of the United States supports us,” Shmyhal said.

Shmyhal noted that bipartisan support for Ukraine remains firm within both the US Congress and among the American public, allowing Ukraine to approach the transition with “careful optimism.”

The recent US elections resulted in Republican control of both the White House and the Senate, while the outcome of the House of Representatives is still pending.

The PM also referenced President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent phone call with Trump, which Zelenskyy described as a “wonderful phone conversation.”

“We understand that the US’s core value is the protection of democracy, the protection of democratic values. This remains unchanged, regardless of the elections,” Shmyhal concluded.

“I am sure that we are ready to continue our cooperation with the United States, the presidents have a very good personal contact. We have much stronger ties with the Congress.”

Earlier, Ukrainian FM stated that Zelenskyy and Trump maintain a longstanding, result-oriented dialogue.
