Orbán Calls for New European Strategy on Ukraine Amid US Republican Gains
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has called for a new European approach to Ukraine following the success of the Republican Party and Donald Trump in the US elections.
Orbán made the statement at the Turkic-speaking countries summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, as reported by Magyar Nemzet.
Orbán noted that the Republican win in the US “raises the question for us, European leaders,” of whether Europe can continue to provide military and financial support to Ukraine on its own.
“There are serious doubts about this, so a new European strategy will be needed,” he said, adding that initial steps in this direction could be taken at an informal EU summit in Budapest on November 7.
One key issue, he highlighted, is the €50 billion loan for Ukraine, which is planned to be jointly financed by the European Union and the United States, according to a prior G7 decision.
Viktor Orbán congratulated Donald Trump on his presidential victory before the official results were announced.
Previously, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Kyiv and Budapest are working on the preparation of a "bilateral document" that will touch on, among other things, security issues and Ukraine's accession to NATO.
