Türkiye Starts 224 km Railway Linking China and Europe, Bypassing Russia

Türkiye has launched construction of a 224-kilometer railway that will integrate the country into an alternative overland route between China and Europe, bypassing Russia, according to Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service.

The intelligence service highlighted the strategic impact of the project: “Most importantly—it diverts cargo flows from Russian and Iranian routes, undermining Moscow’s position in the Eurasian transport market.”

The line will form part of the Zangezur Corridor—a planned railway and highway connecting Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave through southern Armenia. The project is valued at $2.8 billion and is expected to be completed by 2029. It will be capable of transporting up to 15 million tons of cargo and around 5.5 million passengers each year.

Construction will include five tunnels totaling 20 km, three viaducts, and dozens of bridges.

The railway will directly link Türkiye with Nakhchivan via Azerbaijan, enhancing Ankara’s strategic transport role.

The project is expected to create up to 15,000 jobs, boost the eastern Anatolian economy by 5-7%—and reduce delivery times for goods from Asia to Europe by 10-15 days.

Previously, it was reported that Ukraine is working on developing a mechanism to grant the status of a foreign Ukrainian, particularly for Crimean Tatars residing in Türkiye.
