UK Pledges $26.8M to Keep Ukraine’s Lights and Heat On Through Winter

The UK will provide an additional $26.8 million to support Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, the British government announced on January 16.
The funding decision was unveiled on the first anniversary of the 100-Year Partnership agreement between Ukraine and the UK, a long-term framework intended to deepen cooperation across security, economic, and humanitarian areas.

According to the government, the new funding package is aimed at helping millions of Ukrainians maintain access to electricity and heating during the winter months. The money will be directed toward emergency repairs, restoration work, protection of critical facilities, and efforts to stabilize energy supplies nationwide.
The assistance is expected to support homes, hospitals, and schools as Ukraine continues to cope with ongoing damage to its energy system.
Keir Starmer said the commitment reflects Britain’s long-term resolve to stand alongside Ukraine.
“The people of Ukraine should be in no doubt – we will stand with you today, tomorrow and for the next 100 years, both at home and on the international stage, because what happens in Ukraine matters to us all,” Starmer said.
In a separate statement marking the anniversary of the partnership, the British prime minister emphasized the broader meaning of the agreement.
“Our 100 Year Partnership with Ukraine stands for everything Putin is trying to destroy, bringing hope, opportunity and greater security to both our countries,” Starmer added.
“As we mark a year of our unique partnership, we do so in awe of the courage and resilience demonstrated by Ukrainians every day as they repel Russia’s barbaric invasion,” he concluded.
Alongside the energy support, London also announced an expansion of its school twinning initiative, which will now benefit around 54,000 British and Ukrainian students. Over the next three years, an additional 300 schools in both countries are set to join the education partnership under the 100-Year framework.
Earlier, reports emerged that Ukraine was set to launch an energy-focused “Ramstein” meeting to coordinate international support for its embattled power sector.
