Ukraine and Rheinmetall Launch First Joint Defense Production Plant
Ukraine has opened its first joint joint production and repair plant with Rheinmetall, a German defense company, marking a significant collaboration between the state-owned enterprise “Ukrainian Defense Industry” (formerly “Ukroboronprom”) and the German conglomerate. The plant, focused at repairing and manufacturing armored vehicles, is seen as a strategic move to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
According to Alexander Kamyshin, the Ukrainian Minister for Strategic Industries, this partnership will expedite the repair process of foreign military equipment, ensuring a quicker return to the front lines. The workshop is staffed by Ukrainian specialists under the technical supervision of German counterparts, with tax contributions made to Ukraine.
This initiative follows earlier announcements in 2023 about plans for a joint venture between Rheinmetall and Ukrainian Defense Industry. Future plans include the production of armored vehicles like the Fuchs armored transporters, Lynx infantry fighting vehicles, and Panther combat tanks in Ukraine. This joint effort is viewed as a step towards revitalizing Ukraine’s defense industry and achieving greater self-sufficiency.
In addition to the workshop, Rheinmetall is also planning to establish a factory in Ukraine for the production of NATO-standard 155mm artillery shells, addressing a critical need for Ukraine’s armed forces.
