Ukraine and UAE Sign Landmark Trade Deal, Discuss Return of Captive Ukrainian Children

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in the United Arab Emirates on February 16 after a four-year pause; his last visit was also in February 2021. During the visit, he met with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi.
The key focus of their discussion was the signing the landmark trade agreement and humanitarian issue of returning Ukrainian children, UNITED24 Media correspondent reported.
A major agreement was signed between Ukraine and the UAE—the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. This is the most liberal trade agreement Ukraine has signed, eliminating tariffs on 96.6% of Ukrainian goods entering the UAE, according to the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine.
While some quotas will apply, the vast majority of Ukrainian exports will be duty-free, with a UAE business delegation set to visit Ukraine in the coming days.
“The document significantly liberalizes access to the UAE market for nearly all Ukrainian goods, making it easier for Ukrainian companies to sell their products in the UAE,” Zelenskyy added.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy stated that he may travel to Saudi Arabia as soon as this evening or within the next two days.
The Ukrainian President has also discussed the return of stolen children from Russia. The UAE mediation has already helped bring more than 2,000 children back. Ukraine hopes to increase the number of exchanges and secure the return of more children illegally held in Russian captivity, as thousands remain in detention.
“The UAE’s mediation has saved many lives, and we are grateful for this vital cooperation. We also discussed ways to continue this effort,” Zelenskyy wrote on his Telegram channel.
Additionally, Zelenskyy mentioned First Lady Olena Zelenska’s active role in addressing key humanitarian cooperation issues, including rehabilitation programs, support for large foster families, and assistance for Ukrainians in need.
“We appreciate this cooperation that saves lives and strengthens both our nations,” Zelenskyy concluded, commenting on his visit to UAE.
On December 30, 2024, Ukraine secured the release of 189 people from Russian captivity, acknowledging the contributions of its international partners, including the United Arab Emirates, in facilitating this outcome.
