Ukraine Dismantles Its Own Thermal Power Plant to Repair Energy Infrastructure Damaged by Russia
Kurakhivska Thermal Power Plant (TPP) in the Donetsk region has been dismantled for parts to repair other damaged power facilities across Ukraine, The Wall Street Journal reported on November 11.
The disassembly of the plant, located in Kurakhove, took place in spring as part of urgent efforts to stabilize the nation’s energy system.
Following intensified Russian attacks that destroyed nearly half of Ukraine’s power generation capacity, energy provider DTEK launched a search for spare parts across decommissioned plants in Europe, stretching from Brussels and Berlin to Washington.
However, international deliveries required months, forcing DTEK to rely on Kurakhivska for essential equipment.
“This was our main source of equipment, and we had no choice,” said DTEK CEO Maksym Tymchenko.
Originally, Kurakhivska TPP continued operating under massive Russian shellings, but in the spring, the Russians destroyed the bridge that supplied coal to the plant, bringing operations to a halt.
With Kurakhove being frequently targeted, reconstruction was impossible.
The plant’s dismantling was a challenging task. Workers transported hundreds of tons of equipment over local roads due to destroyed rail connections. By the end of the summer, the dismantling was completed.
With parts from Kurakhivska TPP, DTEK restored over 60% of the power generation lost during the Russian spring attacks.
While only the largest boilers and parts too heavy to transport remain, DTEK has assured the plant will be rebuilt once security conditions improve.
