Ukraine Forced to Reduce Nuclear Power After Massive Russian Strike on Energy Grid

Ukraine’s nuclear power plants were forced to cut electricity generation, following a massive Russian attack on the country’s energy infrastructure, leaving consumers without power in at least eight regions of the country, Acting Energy Minister Artem Nekrasov said at a briefing, according to Ukrinform report on December 23.
Nekrasov said the reduction was caused by damage to networks that supply nuclear plants’ internal needs and transmit their output to the national grid.

He added that generation will be gradually restored to nominal levels once repair crews are able to fix the damaged infrastructure. Russian strikes on systems linked to nuclear power operations constitute a violation of nuclear safety norms and should not be ignored by the international community, he said.
Ukraine’s grid operator Ukrenergo reported that the overnight and morning attack was the ninth large-scale strike on the energy system since the start of the year.
Rivne region was almost completely without power as of the morning, with additional outages recorded in Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskyi, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kharkiv regions, Ukrenergo said in a Facebook post.

According to the post, restoration work will begin as soon as the security situation allows. Ukrenergo also said repairs are ongoing in Odesa region after several consecutive Russian attacks, with a significant number of consumers still without electricity.
Ukrainian officials said Russia launched more than 600 drones and dozens of missiles during the combined attack on December 23, with energy facilities—particularly in western regions—among the main targets.
Previously, it was reported that, as a result of a series of massive missile and drone attacks by Russia, all major thermal and hydroelectric power plants in Ukraine have been damaged. Their ability to generate electricity has been significantly reduced, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy.
