Ukrainian soldiers can now preserve their reproductive cells free of charge, ensuring the possibility of becoming parents after their service.

This was announced by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on July 16.

Ukraine has officially launched a state program allowing servicemen and women of the Armed Forces, as well as personnel from other agencies involved in combat operations or national security efforts, to access this service.

The program is available to both men and women and will remain in effect until the end of martial law and for six months thereafter. It aims to safeguard the reproductive rights of Ukraine’s defenders and give them the opportunity to become parents despite the risks posed by war.

In the event of the death of a servicemember or if they are declared deceased by a court, their reproductive cells will be preserved for three years from the date of death or the court's declaration.

The service is currently offered at 18 medical facilities across Ukraine, including in Kyiv, as well as in the Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Rivne, Dnipropetrovsk, Chernivtsi, Ternopil, Volyn, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv regions.

The state budget for 2025 allocates $4.7 million for the implementation of this program.

Earlier, during Russia’s missile and drone attack on Kyiv on the night of July 10, doctors at the National Children’s Specialized Hospital “Okhmatdyt” and the Ukrainian Heart Institute carried out a rare and complex series of organ transplants.

The organs of a four-year-old girl, who was declared brain-dead earlier that night, were used to save the lives of three critically ill children. It was the first time in the hospital’s history that a post-mortem organ donation was followed by immediate transplantation.
