Russia ramped up its aerial assaults against Ukraine in June, launching 1.6 times more missiles and drones compared to the previous month. In response, Ukraine’s defense forces struck nearly 4,000 enemy targets, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Oleksandr Syrskyi stated on June 8.

Syrskyi said the Kremlin aimed to destabilize Ukraine’s defenses by escalating the frequency and scale of attacks while attempting to stretch the frontline. He noted that Russia concentrated its main offensive efforts on the Northern-Slobozhanske, Dobropillia, Pokrovsk, and Novopavlivka axes—areas where Russian troops currently have  significant numerical and equipment superiority.

Syrskyi emphasized that Ukraine’s primary task last month was to stabilize the situation and contain Russian advances in these critical sectors.

He also warned that Russia continues to steadily increase troop numbers, expand its production of missiles and drones, and intensify its overall military campaign. In response, Ukrainian forces are adapting with both symmetrical and asymmetrical tactics, exploring new technological and tactical solutions to counter the invaders.

Despite facing overwhelming force, Ukrainian troops are “bravely holding the line, striking enemy personnel and equipment with precision,” Syrskyi said. He added that Ukrainian forces are also effectively targeting Russian military and logistical hubs deep inside Russian territory in an effort to degrade Moscow’s warfighting capabilities.

In June, Ukraine carried out 115 long-range strikes under the DeepStrike campaign and used artillery to hit 2,864 enemy targets.

One of Syrskyi’s top priorities remains strengthening Ukraine’s air defense systems. He acknowledged the need for ongoing mobilization and recruitment efforts, noting that while challenges persist, the key is to treat recruits fairly and ensure proper training.

During a recent command meeting, Syrskyi said officials identified violations in the mobilization process in several regions, adding that these errors must be analyzed and corrected.

He also highlighted encouraging signs, such as an increase in the number of soldiers returning to military service after going AWOL.

Amid ongoing uncertainty in the international arena, Syrskyi said Ukraine is pursuing new avenues to procure, repair, and modernize weapons systems. He stressed the importance of expanding domestic drone capabilities, particularly to help offset shortages in artillery ammunition.

“We’re heading into another difficult month of war,” Syrskyi concluded, adding that specific new tasks have already been set to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

Earlier, he stated that Moscow has assembled a 50,000 military grouping now advancing toward Sumy. “Their main strategy,” Oleksandr Syrskiy, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said of the Russians, is to “wear us down with their numbers.”
