Ukrainian airborne assault troops said they destroyed two Russian Buk air defense systems in a single day during fighting on the northern Slobozhansky axis, according to a statement of Ukraine’s 8th Air Assault Corps published January 21.

The systems identified were a Buk-M2 and a Buk-M3, both considered among Russia’s core medium-range air defense assets.

Ukraine’s Kursk Group unmanned systems center detected the movement of the Russian launchers and carried out a precision strike.

According to the statement, Russian forces attempted to conceal the air defense systems inside a wooded area, but Ukrainian reconnaissance units were able to locate the positions despite the camouflage.

The Buk family of systems plays a central role in Russia’s layered air defense network and is also used to engage ground targets.

Their loss represents both a tactical and financial setback for Russian forces operating in the area.

Open-source estimates put the cost of a Buk-M2 system at around $25 million, while the more advanced Buk-M3 can cost up to $45 million. In total, Ukraine’s forces said Russia lost roughly $70 million worth of air defense equipment in just minutes.

Earlier, Ukrainian special operations units carried out targeted long-range strikes throughout 2025 that destroyed or disabled Russian air defense systems worth an estimated $4 billion.
