Ukraine to Aid US Defense Against Iranian Shahed Drones in Middle East

Ukraine will aid the US defense against Shahed drones in the Middle East, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's stated on March 5.
Zelenskyy wrote: “We received a request from the United States for specific support in defending against Shahed drones in the Middle East.”
We bring you stories from the ground. Your support keeps our team in the field.
He said he had ordered the delivery of the necessary equipment and tasked Ukrainian specialists with deploying to the region to support local efforts and help ensure security.
The president concluded that Ukraine supports partners who help protect Ukraine’s security, and linked the decision to saving lives.

The request comes as US officials warn that Iran’s Shahed attack drones are a major challenge.
Trump administration officials told lawmakers in a closed briefing that US air defenses will not be able to intercept every Shahed drone, CNN reported on March 4.
Democratic lawmakers also raised concerns about interceptor stocks and resupply. Senator Mark Kelly said, “We do not have an unlimited supply,” and warned that it becomes “a math problem” to replenish air defense munitions.

At the same time, Zelenskyy said Ukraine has gained the world’s most extensive operational experience countering Iranian-designed Shahed drones that Russia uses in large-scale strikes.
He added that this experience has shaped Ukraine’s air-defense procedures, electronic warfare, and interception tactics as attacks change in scale and routes.
Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine is using these lessons to strengthen protection for cities and critical infrastructure and to help partners prepare for Shahed-type threats.
