Ukraine to Form New Brigades as War Enters Critical Phase
The critical phase of the war will come within the next two months, stated Commander of the Ground Forces Oleksandr Pavliuk in an interview with The Economist. According to him, Russia understands that the weapons from the United States have only just begun to arrive at the front, and is throwing all its forces to dislodge Ukrainian units from their positions.
"Russia knows that if we receive enough weapons within a month or two, the situation could turn against them," says Pavliuk.
However, according to Pavliuk, Russian forces have not abandoned their intentions to capture Kyiv after a failed offensive at the beginning of the full-scale invasion. The Ukrainian Armed Forces are forming ten new brigades, preparing for a Russian advance, and part of the forces will be deployed to defend Kyiv.
"Defending Kyiv remains one of our main concerns, no matter how difficult it may be on the eastern direction. It is the heart of Ukraine, and we know the crucial role the defense of the city will play in the future," Pavliuk said.
At the same time, Commander emphasized that in addition to artillery and armored vehicles, the Ukrainian army also needs to strengthen its air defense.
The expected delivery of F-16 fighter jets in early summer will provide a significant "psychological boost" and also protect against attacks by Russian bombers. Currently, Russian aircraft remain beyond the reach of Ukrainian air defenses. Pavliuk says that because of this, Russian planes drop about 130 guided bombs per day on Ukrainian military positions.
