On July 9, the Czech government approved a Ministry of Defence proposal to train Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets, reinforcing the country’s ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression.

The training will be provided by LOM Praha, a state-owned aviation company, which will offer up to 150 flight hours for a maximum of eight Ukrainian pilots by the end of 2026.

Although the Czech military does not operate F-16s, the program will combine simulator-based instruction and flights on L-39 subsonic aircraft, which are available at the company’s training center in Prague.

The full cost of the training—approximately $1.4 million— will be covered by the Czech Ministry of Defence’s existing budget.

“This is not just a professional challenge, but a demonstration of active solidarity,” said Jiří Protiva, Director of LOM Praha. “We have the capacity, knowledge, and experience—and we are ready to offer it where it truly matters.”

Defence Minister Jana Černochová highlighted the importance of investing in training, not just equipment.

“To defend itself effectively, Ukraine needs not only military hardware, but also well-trained armed forces — including air force personnel. As a committed member of the international Coalition of the Willing , the Czech Republic recognizes its responsibility. Supporting Ukraine aligns with both our values and strategic interests.”

Previously, it was reported that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered a stark warning, urging Europe to take full responsibility for its defense as Russia’s war on Ukraine grinds on and the Kremlin accelerates its military buildup.
