Assault troops of the Skelia regiment raised the Ukrainian flag in the center of the embattled eastern city of Pokrovsk, in a video the unit posted on its Telegram channel on December 11 to counter Russian claims that the city has been captured.

The footage, first published by Ukraine’s 7th Rapid Response Corps of the Air Assault Forces, shows fighters of the Skelia assault regiment hoisting Ukrainian flag in a central district of Pokrovsk in Donetsk region, where intense urban combat has raged for months.

The unit presented the action as a direct rebuttal to Russian propaganda about the alleged “taking” of the city.

“The world must see that, despite the Kremlin’s lies about the ‘capture’ of the city, Ukraine is fighting, will fight and will not give its territory to the occupiers,” the 7th Corps said in a caption to the video.

The unit had already reported this week that Ukrainian forces were repelling what it described as the largest Russian mechanized assault inside Pokrovsk to date, saying Russian troops used armored vehicles, cars and motorcycles in an attempt to break through from the south to the northern part of the city before being pushed back in bad weather.

The flag-raising comes after the Russian leader Vladimir Putin and his top general, Valery Gerasimov, claimed that Russian forces had fully seized Pokrovsk and the nearby town of Vovchansk, announcements carried in Kremlin statements and Russian state-aligned media and framed as a major battlefield success.

Earlier, it was reported that Ukraine’s military rejected Valery Gerasimov’s claims to the Russian leader that Kupiansk, Yampil, Vovchansk, and Pokrovsk had been “liberated,” insisting the cities remained under Ukrainian control and branding the announcements part of a disinformation campaign.
