Ukrainian forces in a battle in the Sumy region overran elements of the 810th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, capturing ten Russian marines and inflicting heavy casualties, Ukraine’s 21st Separate Mechanized Brigade reported on June 27.

The 810th brigade, based in occupied Sevastopol, played a key role in the 2014 annexation of Crimea and has long been regarded as one of Russia’s elite marine units.

Now, Ukrainian soldiers say they have shattered that reputation. Russian military bloggers described the battle as a “black day for the marines.”

“Our troops inflicted heavy losses on the enemy, with many killed and wounded,” the 21st Brigade reported. “Ten Russian soldiers surrendered and are now prisoners of war.”

The captured marines revealed that their mission was to secure a tree line inside Ukrainian territory, but they were quickly spotted by a reconnaissance drone and ambushed from both sides.

“We were ordered to dig in along the tree line,” one of the prisoners said in a video released by Ukraine. “As soon as we entered, the ‘bird ’ spotted us, and then they opened fire from both flanks.”

Another captured soldier described being hit by a full range of Ukrainian firepower: “Everything came down on us—”Baba Yaga “, FPV drones, mortars…”

Some of the captured soldiers said they had been forced to sign military contracts while serving prison terms in Russia, under threat of extended sentences for “treason.”

Others claimed they had only recently been deployed from occupied Crimea, serving there just 10 to 12 days before being thrown into an assault.

Ukrainian officials said the prisoners are receiving medical care in accordance with international humanitarian law, and their lives are not in danger.

Earlier, for the first time, Ukrainian forces captured a Russian infantryman using an FPV drone.
