Soldiers of the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade, a unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, successfully targeted and destroyed a Russian armored convoy attempting to advance and engage Ukrainian positions in the Kursk region.

According to video footage released by the brigade, Russian forces were moving with the support of at least four armored vehicles. The ‘God’s Work’ unit, specializing in drone operations, conducted aerial reconnaissance and identified the movement of enemy equipment.

Following this, drone operators from the brigade’s 1st Mechanized Battalion engaged the convoy using FPV drones and airborne munitions, striking Russian infantry fighting vehicles, military trucks, and personnel.

FPV Drones and the transformation of Ukraine’s warfare

Over the past two years, Ukraine has rapidly built an advanced drone warfare industry, shifting the balance on the battlefield and countering Russia’s numerical advantage in armored vehicles.

Before 2022, Ukraine had fewer than 10 drone manufacturers, primarily focused on reconnaissance UAVs. However, the full-scale invasion transformed the sector into a billion-dollar industry, with hundreds of companies now producing FPV, reconnaissance, and strike drones. In 2024 alone, Ukraine produced 1.4 million drones, with annual capacity projected to reach 4 million units.

FPV drones provide a low-cost yet highly efficient solution to counter Russia’s overwhelming advantage in tanks and armored vehicles. For instance, a $500–700 drone can destroy a $2.5 million tank. Even if multiple drones are needed per target, the cost-benefit ratio remains in Ukraine’s favor.

Key features of FPV Drones:

  • Precision strikes – FPV drones can be piloted with extreme accuracy, even in complex battlefield conditions.

  • Flexibility – Unlike missiles or artillery, these drones can be launched from various locations, bypass obstacles, and adapt to enemy movements in real time.

  • Electronic warfare resilience – Some newer models have been developed with fiber-optic guidance, making them immune to Russian jamming systems.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Ukraine’s use of drones has significantly reduced Russia’s tank advantage. Reports from Ukraine’s General Staff indicate that Russia has lost nearly 10,000 tanks, forcing it to rely on outdated Soviet-era reserves.
