UN Confirms 848 Civilian Casualties as Russia Intensifies Strikes Across Ukraine in April

Between April 1 and April 24, 2025, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine confirmed at least 848 civilian casualties from Russian attacks – 151 people killed and 697 injured.
On April 24, Russia launched a massive, coordinated missile and drone strike on Kyiv and at least eight other regions. In the capital alone, twelve civilians were killed. Ninety more were injured, including children. Also, one missile hit a two-story residential building in Kyiv, leveling it.
Overnight strikes also targeted Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhzhia, and Kyiv regions, injuring more civilians.
“What we saw this morning in Kyiv – the destruction, the suffering – reflects a disturbing trend: civilians are paying the highest price as these attacks grow more intense and more frequent,” said Danielle Bell, head of the UN’s human rights mission in Ukraine.
The UN notes a sharp uptick in Russian strikes on densely populated cities throughout April. Civilian casualties are also rising in frontline regions like Kherson, Donetsk, Sumy, and Kharkiv, where small drones have been used in repeated attacks.
Earlier, during Russia’s massive missile attack on the capital on April 24, Kyiv neurologist Yaroslav Kozlov lost both of his children. 21-year-old Nikita was a student at the National Transport University. His younger sister, 19-year-old Sofiia, had recently graduated from the Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design.
