UN Pushes for Immediate Peace in Ukraine as US–Russia Talks Get Underway

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed high-level dialogue between the United States and Russia, two permanent members of the UN Security Council, while calling for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, Ukrinform reported on August 15.
Responding to questions from journalists about the upcoming meeting UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said: “We don’t place bets… We truly welcome dialogue at the highest level between these two permanent members of the Security Council.”
Dujarric emphasized that the UN leadership’s stance on Russia’s war against Ukraine remains unchanged. “We want an immediate, full, and unconditional ceasefire as a first step toward a just, sustainable, and comprehensive peace that will uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence within its internationally recognized borders—in accordance with the UN Charter, international law, and all relevant UN resolutions,” he said.

He added that the UN will be closely monitoring the course of the meeting and its outcome.
The summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin is set to take place in Alaska on August 15. Speaking to Fox Radio on August 14, Trump said he believes Putin will arrive ready to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.
“I believe now he's convinced that he's going to make a deal. He's going to make a deal. I think he's going to," Trump said. "And we're going to find out, I'm going to know very quickly.”
On the same day, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told The Guardian that security guarantees for Ukraine and territorial concessions should be part of any peace negotiations with Russia. He stressed that both issues must be addressed when discussing Ukraine’s future and expressed hope for rapid progress toward ending the war.
Earlier, speaking ahead of Friday’s summit in Alaska, US President Donald Trump said he will work to secure the return of “some territory” to Ukraine in talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
