US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that security guarantees for Ukraine and territorial concessions should be part of peace negotiations with Russia, The Guardian reported on August 14.

Rubio emphasized that both issues must be addressed in talks concerning Ukraine’s future. He expressed hope for rapid progress toward ending the war.

“To achieve peace, I think we all recognise that there’ll have to be some conversation about security guarantees… There’ll have to be some conversation about ... territorial disputes and claims, and what they’re fighting over,” the US Secretary of State said.

Speaking about the prospects for a ceasefire, Rubio noted: “We’ll see what is possible tomorrow. Let’s see how the talks go. And we’re hopeful.”

Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated its demands for what it calls a “settlement” with Ukraine, just days ahead of the planned meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15.

According to Russian state media, ministry representative Aleksei Fadeyev said Moscow’s position “remains unchanged.”

The conditions outlined by Russia include the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the occupied territories of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions, Ukraine’s formal renunciation of NATO membership, and the lifting of all Western sanctions against Moscow.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said he will seek to secure the return of “some territory” to Ukraine during his meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15.
