"Unknown Enemy" Attack Hits Lavan Island Refinery as Iran Assesses Damage

An oil refinery on Iran’s Lavan Island was targeted in what Iranian authorities described as an “enemy attack” on April 8, according to Reuters on April 8.
The outlet reported that the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company confirmed the strike through Shana, the Iranian Oil Ministry’s news outlet.

The company reported that the strike did not cause any casualties. It added that safety and firefighting teams were working to contain the blaze and secure the site after the refinery was hit.
In its initial response, the company described the incident as an “enemy attack,” according to Shana. That wording marked the first official confirmation from Iran’s refining sector that the facility had come under attack.

Reuters noted that the report did not identify who carried out the strike. No further operational damage details were immediately released in the initial statement.
The refinery strike also came amid a separate confrontation over demands that Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran rejected Donald Trump’s overnight demand to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face sweeping strikes on civilian infrastructure, according to Reuters, signaling no retreat before his stated Tuesday deadline.
A senior Iranian source stated Tehran had also dismissed a temporary ceasefire proposal, arguing that any meaningful talks required a permanent halt to US and Israeli strikes.
