UNSC to Hold Landmark Session on 1,000 Days of Russia’s War in Ukraine
In November, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will hold a special session to commemorate 1,000 days since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The announcement was made by the United Kingdom, which presides over the Security Council this month, and will lead the session.
According to Barbara Woodward, the UK’s permanent representative to the UN, the session will take place in the afternoon of November 18 and be chaired by UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
Woodward noted that the UK aims to use its UNSC presidency to address Russian disinformation and human rights abuses. While the Russian delegation reportedly attempted to block the November agenda due to the inclusion of Ukraine’s situation, Woodward stated that a session on Ukraine could still proceed if requested by UNSC member states, even outside the official schedule.
The British representative also highlighted London’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, aligning with UN principles. She underscored the global repercussions of Russia’s actions, emphasizing that Russia’s military partnerships, including alleged arrangements with North Korea and the procurement of drones and munitions from Iran, further destabilize various regions.
In recent weeks, the UNSC has also addressed Russia’s alleged military alliance with North Korea, following reports of North Korean troops being deployed to aid Russia’s war effort. On October 30, Ukraine’s UN representative, Sergiy Kyslytsya, discussed these concerns with the Council.
