Up to 10,000 Ukrainian Women Serving in Combat Roles on the Frontline
A new statistic highlights the growing role of women in defending Ukraine. Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishyna announced that over 10,000 Ukrainian women are now directly engaged in combat missions on the front lines.
“Ukrainians are fighting against Russian aggression as a united nation — both women and men. More and more women serve in the defense forces, and at the moment over 10,000 women are performing combat missions on the frontline,” Stefanishyna said.
This figure represents a significant contribution from Ukrainian women to the war effort. It comes alongside a larger trend of women’s involvement in the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Stressing the importance of women beyond combat, Stefanishyna highlighted their crucial role in rebuilding Ukraine’s economy. “We also reconsidered the role of a woman in the rebuilding and reconstruction of Ukraine. We have a big program under which women will have more access and will be actively engaged in the rebuilding and reconstruction process,” according to Stefanishyna.
The Ministry of Defense previously reported that over 66,900 women currently serve in the military, with 47,000 directly classified as military personnel. Additionally, women hold over 6,500 leadership positions within the Ukrainian military.
Earlier, NATO countries announced that they would provide more than $7 million to support women in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including more than 10,000 uniforms, boots, and other necessary equipment.
